Current Pattern

Current way of looking at things:

The whole complex of established attitudes, concepts, feelings, values, and perceptions make up the current way of looking at things (current pattern). This current way of looking at things is established by culture, by personal experience, and by the influence of education and other people. It is often not easy to define the current way of looking at things, but nevertheless it is something very definite and it completely controls any thinking you are going to do about the situation. The current way of looking at things may be the only one you can think of or it may be the one you have chosen from among many others. Or it may be that the current way of looking at things is the only one possible with the available concepts.

Jealous brothers:

A French farmer is trying to divide up his land among his three sons, each of whom is jealous of the others. The task is a difficult one, because some of the land is vineyard, some woodland, and some pasture, and it is difficult to assess the relative value of each. After trying for a long time with different calculations and lines of division on the map, the old man escapes from his current way of looking at things. He tells the eldest son to take whatever portion he likes and the second son to do likewise. The third son will then choose which of the created portions he wants. In this way the responsibility for a fair division rests directly with the first son and then the second son, and if the division is unfair they themselves suffer.

Promotion:

The current way of looking at promotion is that a person who works hard and shows ability will in the course of his life be promoted to more and more senior positions, and with each promotion will come an increase in income. It is also understood that a person will be interested in progressing through the hierarchy in this manner in order to acquire personal achievement and status as well as income. From the point of view of the organization there is selection of a man who has shown ability in his present position and is therefore likely to manage his new position. In terms of the concept package, promotion involves position, responsibility, reward, hierarchy, seniority, ability, ambition, status, etc.
