In most situations it is much easier to pick out the faults because these are more obvious since they are based on what we think a thing should be. That is to say, being negative is based on our past experience whereas being positive requires us to look into the future to assess something new. A man who designs a new dress is likely to be told that it is old-fashioned because a comparison with the past is always possible – to assess the dress’s virtues requires more effort. Anything new seems to involve effort, therefore it is easier to be negative.
